Weekly Log

More About Weekly Log

Hello! Soo glad you made it here. Take a minute to read ?

Weekly Log is a website that I made in an effort to prove a couple things:

  • Social media doesn't have to be nefarious, and using it doesn't have to fuck with your head.
  • I can write an app.

If I'm being real with you, it was mostly the second one. I had this idea jotted down in my phone from years ago about a "weekly tip" app where people could share advice with each other. At the end of last year, I came across this note. I started thinking about the idea in more detail and pivoted towards "weekly logs", where folks could write about whatever they wanted, in detail. It would be a no-frills platform that values moderation and quality.

I've suffered from social media / tech overuse, alike many of us, so the last thing I want to do is create a platform that contributes to this issue. I want to promote unburdened creation, and intentional consumption. Here are some of the ways that I am trying to facilitate this through the app structure:

  • One post per week (encouraging consideration and care)
  • Feed is reverse chronological, and only features users you follow (providing readers with choice)
  • Posts are text only (reducing mental clutter)
  • The only stats you see are yours (shifting focus away from comparison)

The last point is important to my vision for this app. In my opinion, our creativity thrives when we are unconcerned with others' value judgements. On this website, when looking at a post that is not yours, it's just you and the post. You could be looking at a post with 0 or 1,000 likes- you'd have no idea. I want users to be sufficiently in their own world when using Weekly Log. I want the experiences of both reading and writing to feel personal.

You can see who reacts to your posts, and who follows you. But this information stays between you and them.

There are plenty of other decisions that I have made and will continue to make, to make this social media app different in hopefully beneficial ways, such as a paginated feed to give users natural stopping points, and plans to implement an advanced search for user control (avoiding ambiguous algorithms).

I am not profiting off of your data, and will do my best to ensure its safety.

There is nothing on the website that promotes more viewed or liked content, putting everyone on an even playing field.

Anyway anyway.. I'm not the best writer, but it is something I have dabbled a bit with in the past, and it always seems to calm my nerves and collect my thoughts. I hope that this website can do that for some others.

I have many more features and updates planned, some you may even find exciting! Read about them here.
